What is the Doctorate in Arts?
The Doctorate in Arts (DA) is a practitioner-based research doctorate. Your dissertation grows out of your own creative or professional practice, so scholarly inquiry and the work you already do run side by side.
A traditional PhD is usually theoretical, full-time, and campus-based. A professional master's focuses on applied skills. The DA combines original research with your ongoing practice.
Two examples of how this works in practice:
- A curator researches how a regional collection is interpreted and displayed for the public.
- A conservation professional studies a preservation method used in their own institution.
Who this programme is for
The DA is for practising creative and cultural professionals who want doctoral-level research alongside their careers. It builds on meaningful practice experience, so research maturity in your field is part of the entry profile.
- Visual artists and curators
- Cultural heritage and conservation professionals
- Arts educators and academic faculty
- Creative directors and cultural entrepreneurs
- Film, media and performing arts practitioners, literary practitioners, museum administrators and cultural policy professionals

Career paths after the DA
A doctorate in the arts can support senior creative, curatorial and academic-adjacent roles, such as creative director, senior curator, heritage or conservation lead, or arts educator. The research project builds on your own practice, so it deepens the work you already do.
Others may move towards cultural policy, museum administration or arts management. Academic and government cultural posts set their own entry rules, so check them with the employer or regulator in advance.
Your results depend on your experience, your discipline and the roles you target. The DA does not guarantee a promotion, salary rise or job.
Eligibility
Academic route
A master's degree, or a Level 7 certification with 5 or more years of related field experience. Relevant fields include fine arts, visual arts, performing arts, art history, cultural studies, literary arts, design, film studies, music, architecture (cultural heritage focus) and related disciplines. An adjacent field may be considered individually with demonstrated creative or cultural practice.
Minimum grade
An overall master's result of 55% (equivalent to a GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale).
Tests
Admission works without GMAT, GRE or language tests. GMAT or GRE scores can be submitted voluntarily to strengthen a scholarship application.

The curriculum: three phases
The DA runs in three sequential phases across three competency areas: creative and artistic foundational skills, critical and theoretical research skills, and applied practice and scholarly communication.
-
Coursework and Research Foundations (months 1 to 7)
- Research Lab and Creative Inquiry (months 8 to 33)
- Doctoral Dissertation and Viva Voce (months 34 to 36)
Research methods, arts-based methodologies and the critical literature around your discipline. Within your first month you submit an 8 to 10 page preliminary research proposal on EIMT’s template, and your supervisor gives feedback before formal research begins.
The main research phase, supervised throughout. You submit a synopsis in months 8 to 10, then progress reports signed by your supervisor. A Pre-Submission Defence Committee reviews your work before you submit the dissertation.
External examiners review your dissertation, followed by a viva voce defence. The doctorate is awarded on successful defence.
Disciplines covered: fine and visual arts; Islamic art and architecture; Arabic calligraphy and typography; cultural heritage management and conservation; performing arts; film studies and screen media; digital arts and new media; literary arts and creative writing; art history and cultural criticism; cultural policy and arts administration.
How it is assessed
Assessment follows the three phases in order: proposal and foundations, Research Lab, then the dissertation and viva voce. Your dissertation comes last, in the third phase.
To be awarded the doctorate you need a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher across all programme requirements and a successful viva voce defence.
On completion you receive a certificate, transcript and thesis approval letter. A digital certificate is issued by email, with a physical copy on request. See graduation ceremonies for online students online graduation ceremonies qatar.
You study on the university's LMS with a dedicated supervisor or research faculty member.
