What is the Doctorate in Science?
The DSc is a research doctorate that turns your scientific or technical experience into original, publishable-quality research. You complete a short coursework phase, then spend most of the programme on a dissertation in your own specialisation.
It suits people who want depth in their field while they keep working. A taught master's gives coursework most of the weight, while the DSc devotes 150 of its 180 ECTS to your own research.
Two examples of how this works in practice:
- An environmental engineer investigates a monitoring method used across their organisation's sites.
- A data scientist in healthcare technology studies how a predictive model performs on real hospital data.

Career paths after the DSC
A research doctorate in science can support senior technical, research and specialist roles, such as principal engineer, research lead, head of data or technical adviser. Your dissertation builds on your own field, so it deepens the work you already do.
Some graduates move towards teaching or consultancy. Academic and government posts set their own entry rules, so check them with the employer or regulator in advance.
Your results depend on your experience, your specialisation and the roles you target. The DSc does not guarantee a promotion, salary rise or job.

Academic route
A master's degree in a relevant field from a regionally accredited institution, with a strong academic record, or a Level 7 certification with 5 or more years of related field experience. Relevant fields include natural sciences, applied sciences, engineering, IT, environmental science, life sciences, healthcare, data science and mathematics.
Work experience
Experience in a for-profit, non-profit or government organisation.
Documents
Undergraduate and master's transcripts (or your Level 7 certificate and evidence of experience), a copy of your ID or passport, and your CV. EIMT's Programme Director may invite you to an interview.

Top-up route
Ask an Edzip advisor to confirm whether the 12-month route fits your background.
The curriculum: five core modules plus thesis
The DSc runs in three sequential phases across three competency areas: managerial foundational skills, global management skills and technical skills.
-
Coursework and comprehensive exam (months 1 to 7)
- Research (months 8 to 33)
- Thesis and viva voce (months 34 to 36)
Five core modules worth 30 ECTS (6 ECTS each), plus two to three electives linked to your scientific stream. A comprehensive exam confirms you are ready for independent research. You finalise your research topic within six months of enrolment, and a personal supervisor is assigned.
Research Methods
Designing, running and evaluating scientific research, and choosing the right research paradigm.
Qualitative Methods and Techniques
Interviews, grounded theory and qualitative analysis for fields where qualitative evidence drives conclusions.
Quantitative Methods and Techniques
Statistics, experimental design, hypothesis testing and quantitative data modelling.
Research Tools
Academic databases, citation management, scientific writing, research ethics and preparing work for peer review.
The Research Proposal
Turning your topic into a full research plan with questions, a literature review, methodology and timeline.
Data collection and analysis, worth most of the 150 ECTS thesis. You open with a state-of-the-art seminar, submit a synopsis in months 8 to 10, then file progress reports every six months. A Pre-Submission Defence Committee reviews your work, and you give an open research seminar before final submission.
External examiners review your thesis, followed by a viva voce defence. The doctorate is awarded on successful defence.
How it is assessed
Assessment follows the three phases in order: coursework and comprehensive exam, research milestones, then thesis and viva voce. You finalise and defend the thesis in months 34 to 36.
To be awarded the doctorate you need a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher, an accepted dissertation and a successful viva voce. On completion you receive a certificate, transcript and thesis approval letter. See graduation ceremonies for online students
You study on the university's LMS, with a personal supervisor and progress reports every six months.
